Fredericksburg Artists School goes "ON THE ROAD".

This summer, come enjoy the calming natural beauty of Pendaires (Pan da ray).  This peaceful mountain golf course and resort, in the heart of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range is the perfect location for our summer workshops.

Located in the tiny mountain hamlet of Rociada, New Mexico, Pendaries is one of the best kept secrets in the Rockies.  The amazing scenery and comfortable weather beckons visitors to this hideaway year after year.  Rociada is about 25 miles northwest of Las Vegas, N.M., which is about 65 miles North of Santa Fe on Interstate 25.

After a full day of painting the beautiful vistas, Spanish architecture or the Sapello River in the adjacent Sapello Valley, the students can relax at the Pendaries Lodge (www.pendaries.net).  The lodge offers a rustic atmosphere and is located near the golf course.  The lodge has 18 cozy rooms.  Each is very comfortable and each have views of the beautiful valley.   Students can also dine in the evenings at the full service restaurant.  The lodge also serves a complimentary continental breakfast each morning to its guests.  Lunch can be obtained at the Club House located at the golf course or enjoy a great lunch at the diner/convenience store  located at the entrance to Pendaries Village. We have arranged discounted rates at the Lodge for our classes, so be sure to tell them you are a student at FAS.  The rates should be around $65-70 per night.  Reservations and questions about  lodging should be directed to the Lodge at 1-800-733-5267.  Sign up early as the lodge is busy during the summer months.

The newly remodeled Conference Center will serve as our meeting place the first morning of the class and is available in the event of rain or in the evenings if the teacher wishes to show a slide show, etc.

We have fallen in love with the area and spend most of the summer there each year.  There is plenty for the non painting spouses to do other than to enjoy golf.  Hiking abounds through the Pecos Wilderness and plenty of fishing opportunities are nearby.

We know you will love your experience here.  The valley floor is at 7500 feet above sea level which will ensure a cool summer in the mountains for all of us who are ready to get out of the heat in our home state, wherever that may be.  We look forward to seeing you in Pendaries.  Call Bill Bush with any questions at FAS at 830-997-0515.

Directions

From Las Vegas, N.M. go north on 7th St (Highway 518).  This is also the Taos Highway.  Travel about 12 miles to Sapello, turn left on Highway 94/105 (at the Chevron Station).  Go about 12.5 miles on Highway 105 and turn left into entrance of Pendaries Village (across the convenience store).  Follow paved road from there to guard house and follow the signs to the Lodge.

GUIDO FRICK

Oil Painting
Landscape/Still Lifes
June 8-12, 2009
Rociada, NM
Tuition $550

How to create not just a painting, but a piece of art?  How to put soul, power and emotion into your painting to avoid ending up with just a copy of your subject.?  Guido will demonstrate how to combine your visual impressions with you inner sensitivity to find your own artistic language, allowing your individual personality to be recognizable in every brushstroke.  You will be encouraged to show excitement and emotions to bring your painting alive.  Don’t be satisfied with something that is just pretty and polished, but instead express yourself in a bold and colorful way, by always allowing your enthusiasm about the beauty of a landscape or a still life setup to surface in your painting.  Do you want to achieve a convincing result in one session?  Do you want to catch a particular mood in one spontaneous moment?  Set your goal, and Guido will describe and demonstrate to you how to get there.  This is done by learning how to see, by making decisions about hue, value, and temperatures quickly and confidently, by concentrating your energy and staying focused on the essential points.  This workshop gives you tools that will enable you to create a thrilling piece of art any time, any place and under any circumstances.  Theorize in this workshop as little as possible, but as much as necessary, and then swing a big brush for five days.

Guido Frick is truly an outdoor painter. “It might sound overstated, but I really consider nature as my original studio.”  The German born painter lives half of the year in Europe and travels the other half almost exclusively through America’s western states. He want to express himself, about places like Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and others.  In the early 1980’s he met with instructor and painter Sergei Bongart, and still considers this encounter as the most influential experience he has had as a painter.  “Sergei truly opened my eyes and showed me the way.”  Throughout the 70’s Guido has studied with Professor Karel Hodr from Progue, a well respected impressionist painter and art teacher throughout Europe.  He has been published in various publications and is always crossing the line between impressionism and expressionism.   His work can be seen at The Parkside Gallery, Carmel, CA www.theparksidegallery.com Smith-Klein Gallery, Boulder, CO at www.smithklein.com;  Mountain Trails Gallery in Palm Desert, CA

JOHN BUDICIN

Oil
Landscape, Plein Air (Pendaries, NM)
June 22-26, 2009
Tuition $ 850

This class is limited in size to allow the instructor to give more individual attention.  The essence of the workshop will be on what to look for; how to simplify and make an exciting statement.

We will focus on starting with simple shapes, as accurately as possible, placing the correct values and colors from the start. From this simple lay-in we will work towards a finished painting.

"I will work and share what I have learned; my approach, what I look for, what I utilize or omit from the scene."

"Class will begin with a short lecture and samples of my approach, as well as some completed field studies. From there we will go directly on location and begin painting."

"I like to work individually with each student and learn about their goals. Then I direct them towards developing their own personal way of seeing."

"We will be painting at all times. In case of rain, students should bring photographs or small studies to work from while indoor. What is important to me, as a teacher, is to share whatever knowledge I have with my students. I have no secrets about the way I paint; my philosophy or my approach. I want to give each student all I can through personal attention, direction, and group discussions. There are no shortcuts in reaching for our goals; just hard work and determination. If I can help a student reach his/her goal then I have done my job."
