JEFF C. LEGG

Oil
Still Life / Portrait
March 5 - 9, 2012
Tuition $695 + Model fee

Over the course of his creative life, Jeff has developed an appreciation for the teaching process and the give-and-take relationship that he desires to create with students and emerging artists.  Through challenge and encouragement, he hopes to convey that good art is more than just mirroring a subject, but is also about capturing and interpreting a feeling or a mood, and to show that good paintings are built on principles, not formulas.  Legg believes, “The great artist has not reproduced nature, but has expressed by his extract, the most choice sensation it has made upon him”(Robert Henri-The Art Spirit).  Above all, he desires that those he teaches understand they can do more than they now realize and can eliminate fear from the painting process.

During this five day class, Jeff will demonstrate his approach to still life and portraits from the concept to set up and lighting and the progression to the finished work.  Through demonstrations and individual critique, he will emphasize the time tested principles including drawing, value, edges, color and interpreting light and shadow.  Painting from life will be emphasized and is at the core of Mr. Legg’s artistic sensibility.  Legg says, “Visualization and being truthful about the subject are inextricably linked and are at the heart of creativity.  A painting is a “translation” and can only become as great as the artist’s love and understanding of his subject.”

CAROLYN ANDERSON

Oil & pastel
Figure / Portrait
March 12 - 16, 2012
Tuition $725+ model fee

Explore the qualities of composition, value, and color, with an emphasis on the use of contrast, rhythm, and edges. Learn to interpret the subject matter and to enjoy the challenge and spontaneity of alla prima painting. Subjects will include live models. There will be daily demonstrations, a slide presentation, and as much individual instruction as possible.

Using what she descries as a blend of expressionism and impressionism, Anderson paints the human face, landscapes, and horses with equal skill. "What draws me to a certain person is character more than anything," she says. "For a while it was children, but they can be difficult to paint without getting too cute. I try to convey a touch of humanity. I still paint horses, too, because they have such a great form. I like doing winter landscapes because of the abstract quality and Indian dancers because of the color and movement. I bring something different to my portrait work after doing landscapes. Art is all about relationships and perspective."

Born and raised in the Chicago area, Carolyn Anderson attended school at Illinois State University.  She joined the VISTA program (Volunteers in Service to America) in the early 70's and was assigned to work on an Indian reservation in north central Montana and now lives in Havre, a small community near the Canadian border.

Anderson's paintings are full of color and expression.  The focus in her work is often loosely rendered in an almost sketch-like improvisation.  The emphasis is to catch the essence of each subject.  Her subjects vary from dancers to horses to landscapes, but she is primarily known for her portraits.

Anderson has participated in the C. M. Russell Art Auction, one of the Northwest's largest shows, since 1980.  In 1999 and 2000, she was awarded Jurors' Best of Show Awards, along with the 1999 Artist's Choice Award.  As a member of the Western Rendezvous of Art, she also received a Merit Award in 1999.  Her work has been featured in national publications, including American Art and Architecture, Art of the West and Southwest Art magazines.  She is represented by Total Arts Gallery in Taos, NM; Gallery 1261 in Denver, CO; and Simpson Gallagher Gallery in Cody, WY.

You can also see her work on her web site at www.carolynanderson.com.

DUKE SUNDT

Sculpture In Oil-Based Clay
March 19- 23, 2012
Tuition $ 575 + Model Fee

As an artist with the curiosity of always wanting to know what is on the back side of any two dimensional art work, I prefer three dimensional design for my personal art expression.  I just see and think in 3 D.  I enjoy creating work that is detailed and representational in style.

This class will be geared to intermediate and advanced artists experienced in sculpture.  For sculptors who have not used proportional calipers in the creation of their work in the past, Sundt will instruct them on the techniques of using, what he consider, an indispensible tool.  Proportional calipers have been used by artists for hundreds of years, but somehow their importance escaped many college art teachers.  The first 15 years of his art career he pointed up (enlarged) designs without understanding the value of proportional calipers.  In the mid 1980’s, he took a  workshop offered to advanced sculptors wanting to learn more about enlarging or diminishing the measurements of their work.  The education he received about the mechanics of this tool made a huge difference in his subsequent work.  The class will sculpt a portrait of a live model in oil-based clay, beginning with a simple armature.  Students will be invited to bring their own tools, however, Sundt will provide proportional calipers they may purchase if needed.

Oil
Still Life, Portrait and Figure Painting
April 2 - 5, 2012  Painting Class
Tuition $800 + $25 Model Fee

When students say, "I would like to learn the basics of painting,"  I wonder what they really mean.  Do they want rules and techniques?  Rules, as desirable as they are, limit the student as he simply does as he is told, leaving little or no chance for understanding the underlying principles producing his desired results.  However, finding out why a background recedes, why a foreground comes forward, and why paint quality can intrigue and hold the viewer to the surface of your painting frees the student and expands his/her ability to appreciate more advanced concepts.  Understanding the principles of the language of painting are the true basics needed.

This class is designed for students who consider themselves to be at least at the intermediate level. You will be expected to understand value, color relationships and have some drawing skills. The emphasis will be on creating your own personal style, continuing your development as an artist, and taking each student to a higher level of accomplishment.

The class will be limited in size to allow each student more individualized attention.

You are encouraged to bring photos or jpegs of past work for critic and samples of other artists work whom you admire or who inspire you. (“No, I'm not asking for kudos here, bring someone else! Preferably more than one artist.) This way I have an idea of where you are and what direction you'd like to go,”  Christensen says.

You may work from photos, your computer screen, or life which ever you choose. Just make sure they are your images. If you choose to work from photos please bring good photos! It's hard to make a good painting from a bad photo, so start with something good. You'll want reference material that shows light and shadow and has all of your subject matter in the photo. Please also bring a more complex photo to work up to. a more complex composition, more subjects etc. This class is designed to challenge you. We will discuss choice of subject, light, composition, and edges to create your personal kind of painting and the vision you have in mind.

We will also take a tour to a local gallery to see how other artists deal with color temperature, intensity, value, edges and subject matter. This will be a question and answer time to help you discover your personal tastes and direction as an artist.

“I  am inspired by the simple, everyday interaction of the animals in their environment; the way that light dances across the form, the harmony of color relationships, and the shapes of light and shadow.  I prefer early morning light or late afternoon settings, with extreme back-lighting.  My focus is on the farm animals and the use of color, light and the texture of the oil paint to convey a mood.”

Cheri was born in a rural farm and ranch town and is quite comfortable in that environment.  She attended the University of North Carolina and the University of Washington.  She studied oil painting for three years with Ron Lukas, a protégé of Sergie Bongart, who taught in the tradition of the Russian Impressionists. In her studies, Cheri concentrated on seeing an conveying the effects of color and light on forms.

JIM LAMB

LANDSCAPE IMPRESSIONS-LESS IS MORE (OUTDOOR/INDOOR)
March 26-29, 2012
Tuition $495

It will be my purpose in the workshop to emphasize the importance of simplicity in all aspects of the painting process.  I will begin the class by showing examples of paintings created using simple palettes and simple design.  I will create a demonstration painting on location the first session as well as additional demonstrations if desired by the students.

We will discuss, first of all, the importance of selecting simple subjects and developing those subjects via thumbnail sketches into strong, simple designs, keeping in mind the idea that usually less detail and simple design results in stronger works of art.  Simplicity of color selection for the palette will also be illustrated by demonstrating how to mix nearly endless variations of harmonious color using an extremely limited palette.  Finished works of art will not be our goal.  There will be discussion about how to see the large design masses and pieces of color in a landscape subject.  I will emphasize resolving problems that arise in creating a painting more than expecting finished paintings from the students.  There will be personalized instruction for each student presented at the level of that student's experience and understanding.

Jim loves the landscape and the way the various qualities of light play upon it.  He paints in a realistic style and was influenced in his early years by the wonderful landscape paintings he saw at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle.

A large percentage of his paintings are created on location, "en plein air." Painting outdoors is invigorating to me”, Jim says. “I enjoy the solitude; the sights and sounds of the outdoors.  I'm driven by the challenge of capturing directly on canvas the essence of what inspires me.”  His preferred medium is oil paint on fine linen canvas. He love the texture of the canvas surface and the flexibility of oils.  The small paintings he creates on location (color studies) he will use, along with photographs, for reference to create larger studio works.

Lamb is a member of the prestigious Western Rendezvous of Art (NWR) group of artists, which holds its’ annual show in August in Helena, Montana. His work has been featured in numerous art publications including Southwest Art magazine, Art of the West, among others.   Lamb has exhibited, since 2001, at the historic Laguna Art Museum for its annual Invitational Plein Air Painting Competition held each October, and has been honored with several one man shows at his California galleries.

In addition to his fine landscape paintings, Lamb's work has literally been seen around the world in the form of limited edition prints, collectible plates, greeting cards, puzzles, posters, apparel, U.S. postage stamps, sculptures, and many other forms.

Jim is currently represented by the Dawson Cole Fine Art Gallery, Laguna Beach, CA, Howard/Mandville Gallery, Kirkland, WA, the Morris & Whiteside Galleries, Hilton Head Island, SC, and the Zantman Galleries, Carmel, Ca.  See his website at www.jimlambstudio.com.

HODGES SOILEAU

PAINTING THE PORTRAIT/FIGURE IN OIL
March 26 -30, 2012
Tuition $595 + $30 model fee

In this painting workshop, the instructor will impart some of the principals that he uses and considers most important, whether one is working in oils, or any medium that uses color.  The principals of shape, value, edges, and color temperature are what are most important.  The importance of understanding the effect temperature of light has on color will be explained, stressed and demonstrated.  Increasing ones observation skills, as they relate to these principals is extremely important.

Soileau will demonstrate how to begin a painting in different ways.  There is no one best way to do this.  One must remain open to the possibilities, depending on the situation,  and temperament of the artist.   One should have options in their arsenal that allows them to tackle any subject.  This may at times require a different approach.  This should also prevent one from becoming a formula painter.

Last, but not least is the importance of trying to have fun with paint.  Painting, although difficult, and sometimes frustrating should certainly be fun……or why do it!

BOB ROHM

Pastel & Oil
Landscape - Plein Air & Studio
April 2 - 6, 2012
Tuition $695

Bob's fresh, informative workshops are an intensive period of work, study, and FUN that have been enthusiastically received by both beginner and advanced students.

The first day begins with a short lecture and demonstration emphasizing the simplicity of how a painting works and the procedures to create one.  The entire painting process is covered, from the application of the medium, to achieving clean color, good value relationships and balanced compositions. Special attention will be placed on learning to see masses as opposed to line, and form rather than detail.  Focus will also be on how to accurately simplify the colors and values of the main shapes.  Techniques designed to complete “Alla Prima” paintings.

Bob works individually with each student at their easel and guides them at their own level and in their own style.  Students may work in oils or pastels.  There will be lots of painting time and individual attention.  Through out the week Bob will do painting demonstrations and critiques.  “What’s important to me, as a teacher, is to share what I’ve learned with my students.”

This workshop will be conducted both in the studio and, “en plein air”, on location and is for anyone interested in learning to develop creative, painterly paintings with clean, rich color and dynamic compositions.

MICHAEL ALBRECHTSEN

Oil
Plein Air Landscape / Studio
April 9 - 13, 2012
Tuition $575

Whatever the subject might be, his works show a quiet, sure mastery of medium, composition, color, and lighting – so subtly balanced that the viewer all but bypasses the surface of the canvas, tapping directly into the emotions Albrechtsen is trying to convey.

When describing Michael’s work, a fellow artist said, "He uses his keen sense of color to set mood; his paintings appear to have pure, glowing light, as though they are drenched in sunlight, without appearing forced or artificial. He has an expressive storytelling ability."

This class will focus on transferring what you photographed to your canvas, and still capture the emotion and color of the real life image. Many times we find it hard to get colors true to life, and we lose the emotion when we work from a photograph. This class will start out taking photos and then painting from the photos you take. This class will have a strong emphasis on emotion, color, and composition, and how to make a dull photo into a colorful piece of artwork. We will learn how to sharpen our skills or observation by looking around us and transferring all we see and feel to the canvas.

Demonstrations will be given as well as a slide presentation. We will also be using critiques to help us learn as much as possible. Please bring your camera to class.

Soon after finished his Master of Fine Arts degree at USU in 1994, Michael was recruited as a greeting card artist by Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, Missouri.  Michael says working for Hallmark taught him discipline, and that the move to Kansas has exposed him to a completely different area of country which has in turn affected his artwork.

Michael has been featured in Southwest Art Magazine and is represented by galleries across the U. S., including Meyer Gallery in Santa Fe and Scottsdale.

PLEIN AIR PAINTING
April 16-20, 2012
Tuition $625

This workshop will focus on zeroing in on a concept and carrying it through to a realized representation.

The strongest paintings are the product of an artist who has a clear mental picture of  the subject and what it is that he or she wants to convey. The class will do exercises to help you to establish the main motif and " nail it down" quickly.

Understanding how to simplify your compositions and classify value relationships and patterns will go a long way toward creating a successful painting. Other areas such as selecting a focal point, color theory and using "on location" studies for large studio pieces will be addressed as well.  Lectures and demonstrations along with one-on-one problem solving at each student's easel will help you to resolve any problem areas that you may be struggling with.

Still Life
April 16 - 20, 2012
Tuition $625 (Limited to 15 students)

What it takes to make a work of art

In this class everyone will set up still lifes.  I will assist and give advice as needed.  Expect to hear me say, “Keep it simple”.  A few or even sometimes one object painted beautifully is more compelling than a bunch of stuff crammed together.

Expect to do studies.  Learn to get a lot of problems out of the way so that the finish will be fun.  Don’t expect to work on a painting for a long time, one day max.  Every day we’ll start something fresh.  Some days you might do more than one or do a few studies.

I will spend some time each day painting because it’s easier to show than tell.  I’ll show you how to start loose and finish with some great edge work.

Some of the things that will be covered in this class:

bullet

Setting up and lighting a still life

bullet

How and why to use a fan brush (don’t forget your fan brush!)

bullet

How, why and where to use a palette knife. (don’t forget your palette knife)

bullet

How to mix close values.  Lots of talk about values

bullet

How to start a painting.

bullet

How to finish a painting.

bullet

How and why to squint.

bullet

How to look for and paint shapes.

bullet

How to paint white drapery.

bullet

How to keep your darks clean and transparent and why do you want to do that.

End of week critiques with suggestions of what you should concentrate on after you leave the class.

Expect to work hard and take away the knowledge to do good paintings.

Turning Memory into Story: A Memoir Writing Workshop
April 16 - 20, 2012
Tuition $595

Writing is a powerful form of self-expression and memoir writing allows us to tell the story of how we envision our lives and the world. This memoir writing workshop focuses on the processes of writing and story-telling. Participants share works-in-progress and new work that they develop in the course of the workshop. The purpose of this writing workshop is not to create a critical, competitive environment around the process of writing, but rather to enhance each participant’s writing ability and vision of his or her own work.

The workshop, suitable for both beginning and advanced writers, is interactive, with one-on-one contact with all three workshop leaders.

Some workshop participants are interested mostly in the process of writing. Others also want to know more about the process of publication. Publishing is different from what it was twenty-five years ago and there are now many avenues for writers to take. We reserve the last day of the workshop for an in-depth and detailed discussion of the steps in the different ways of publishing, from finding an agent or large publisher, to self-publishing, blogs, e-books and more.

Participants in past workshops have published their memoirs and others are in the process of preparing memoirs or other work for publication.

MICHELLE DUNAWAY

Oil
Capturing the Essence of the Portrait and Figure-5 day painting and drawing class
April 23-27, 2012
Tuition $595 + $30 Model Fee

This comprehensive workshop will focus on capturing the essence of the sitter's pose using our tools at hand, composition,  structure of anatomy, color temperature, strong values and variance of edges.

Dunaway will demo each morning and will provide one-on-one instruction as students paint from life.

The first two days will be " Painting" with charcoal.   This is an excellent way to work on the dynamics of brush handling , variance of edges and thoughtful composition as a preliminary to moving into a full color palette.

For the following 3 days we will cover all the bases of Alla Prima painting with a variety of setups in the studio.
The first day will be painting from a nude model in the studio. We will explore the variations in composing a life study, approaching the painting with confidence and intention, while remaining open to the fluid inspiration of the moment. Color-mixing of flesh tones will be covered with a particular emphasis on the importance of subtle temperature shifts which add depth to the painting and help maintain a strong value structure.

The second day we will shift our attention to the portrait. Taking all that has been covered the first day and adding to it the ability to get the particular likeness of your subject and the emotion conveyed in the subtle expressions of the sitter's face.

The third day will be a clothed figure, either in the studio or outdoors, depending on the weather.

Michelle Dunaway is a professional artist living in New Mexico and has been drawing for as long as she can remember.   As a young child she was captivated with drawing people and that focus continues to this day. "I've always been intrigued with drawing faces and hands, also capturing the essence of the human spirit fascinates me, whether it is found in the graceful movements of the human form or the eyes of the model. There is a whole story waiting to be found and revealed through the brush."

Dunaway was a top finalist in the Portrait Society of America's International Portrait Competition in 2010, where she won the Award of Exceptional Merit for her double portrait of the daughters of actress Jane Seymour.  Her painting 'Mucha and Peonies' was Awarded Best of Show in the July Raymar Paintng Competition and chosen as one of the top twelve finalists in the annual competition.

CHUCK RAWLE

Oil
Plein Air Landscape / Studio
April 23-27. 2012
Tuition $525

This class will focus on the skills to be a successful plein air painter.  Many artists insist on working from life whether they are painting still life, figures, or landscapes.  Outdoors is the best place to learn to paint convincing landscapes.  Everyone can expect to start several small studies outdoors.  Getting a quality start outdoors is much more important than struggling with larger finished pieces.  Good starts with solid values and sensitive color are the keys to those larger finished pieces.  Because those good starts come from good decisions at the beginning, there will be some lecture to give you the information to make those decisions.  The instructor will demo when appropriate.  Chuck’s demos will be educational, as they are designed to illustrate a specific point.

Chuck has been painting outdoors full time for the last 8 years.  In order to spend more time outdoors in some of America’s most beautiful places, Chuck sold his home, bought an RV and has been RVing and painting full time.  Such a bold move enabled him to study nature thoroughly.  His paintings are internationally collected and he is represented by six galleries from North Carolina to Idaho.  He has exhibited in numerous juried shows including the prestigious Arts for the Parks Top 100.  Chuck has been assisting Scott Christensen with his workshops for several years and has learned a great deal from him not only about painting, but also about teaching painting.  So bring a portable easel, an inquisitive mind, and an enthusiastic attitude for five days of great painting.

Although Chuck has studied extensively in workshop situations, especially at Fredericksburg Artist School, he believes nature is the best teacher.  With his experience, he can prepare you to learn the lessons that nature has to offer.  See his work at www.chuckrawle.com

After graduating from Illinois State University and the American Academy of Art, Kevin set out on a free-lance illustration career which lasted thirteen years. Working mainly in the editorial area of illustration, his work consisted mostly of paintings for book covers and magazines. Some of his clients included: Penguin Publishing, Houghton Mifflin, Harlequin, Signs of the Times, Guideposts, Readers Digest, and Golf Digest.

"I had always dreamed of becoming an illustrator," explains the artist. "But the demands of painting someone else's ideas finally took it's toll. I decided that life is too short and that I had to paint from my heart. We're only given one chance at life, and I had to paint what was important to me. What's important to me", says Kevin, "is that I try to capture a little of what God has already created, in each of my paintings. One can obviously see the beauty in God's creation in the landscape, but for me it is even more profound when I see and experience that beauty in people. There is always something new and awe-inspiring to discover when painting the human figure."

Kevin's work has been the subject of several one man shows as well as being included in such prestigious annual shows as the Oil Painters of America (Regional & National Exhibitions), The Great American Figurative Shows (Waterhouse Gallery, Santa Barbara), and  Salon International (Greenhouse Gallery, San Antonio). Kevin's award winning artwork can be seen at galleries throughout the U.S.  Kevin has won the 'Peoples Choice Award' and an 'Award for Excellence' at the OPA Eastern Regional Exhibitions in 2008, and 2009. He most recently received the Award for Excellence in Figurative Painting at the 2010 OPA National Exhibition, and the Gold Medal for his painting 'What Dreams May Come' at the 2010 OPA Eastern Regional Exhibition.

Oil Painting
Landscape/Still Lifes
May 21-25, 2012
Tuition $595

How to create not just a painting, but a piece of art?  How to put soul, power and emotion into your painting to avoid ending up with just a copy of your subject.?  Guido will demonstrate how to combine your visual impressions with you inner sensitivity to find your own artistic language, allowing your individual personality to be recognizable in every brushstroke.  You will be encouraged to show excitement and emotions to bring your painting alive.

Don’t be satisfied with something that is just pretty and polished, but instead express yourself in a bold and colorful way, by always allowing your enthusiasm about the beauty of a landscape or a still life setup to surface in your painting.

Do you want to achieve a convincing result in one session?  Do you want to catch a particular mood in one spontaneous moment?  Set your goal, and Guido will describe and demonstrate to you how to get there.  This is done by learning how to see, by making decisions about hue, value, and temperatures quickly and confidently, by concentrating your energy and staying focused on the essential points.  This workshop gives you tools that will enable you to create a thrilling piece of art any time, any place and under any circumstances.  Theorize in this workshop as little as possible, but as much as necessary, and then swing a big brush for five days.

He want to express himself, about places like Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and others.  In the early 1980’s he met with instructor and painter Sergei Bongart, and still considers this encounter as the most influential experience he has had as a painter.  “Sergei truly opened my eyes and showed me the way.”  Throughout the 70’s Guido has studied with Professor Karel Hodr from Progue, a well respected impressionist painter and art teacher throughout Europe.  He has been published in various publications and is always crossing the line between impressionism and expressionism.  His work can be seen at New Masters Gallery-Carmel, CA, Evergreen Fine Art-Evergreen, CO, Austin Galleries-Austin, TX, Red Bird Gallery-Seaside, FL.

MIMI LITSCHAUER

Landsape-Plein Air & Studio-limit 10 students
Oil
June 1-3, 2012
Tuition $425

This workshop will focus on simplification. Simplifying what you see, what you want to say, your tools and your equipment. The goal is to learn how to omit the superfluous and grasp the essentials; to see the landscape less literally and more as an exciting arrangement of shapes and colors. Emphasis will be on learning to organize light and dark patterns through the use of the “Oil Sketch.”

The “Oil Sketch” is to be your resource for future studio paintings. We will learn to see the benefits of painting small formats. Painting small encourages play, experimentation and the element of surprise…all necessary for helping you find your own voice.

We will start with “the idea” (your motive and intent), and then learn how to trust in that personal vision. You will use 5 helpful directives to realize your intention and gain the viewer’s attention.  The workshop will begin with an introduction to supplies and set-ups, followed by a brief overview of basic design principles using slides, demonstrations and in-studio painting exercises as reinforcement, followed by painting on location.

Mimi’s desire to make fine art her life began in her youth which included many classes in painting, drawing, ballet, and piano. Her parents inspired her and impressed upon her “the excitement for the unknown”. After attending several college level art courses, Mimi realized that she belonged in nature (en plein air) and chose to study with professional artists who were working “in the field.”

She moved from Wisconsin to the foothills of Colorado to surround herself with the most insightful and inspiring painters and sculptors living there at the time. Since then she has devoted years and miles to gathering “on location” experience and continually immersing herself in a wide range of artistic styles and thought. A passion for the unknown is clearly reflected in her work and approach today.

Mimi is currently living near and exploring our 10th largest National Treasure, Big Bend National Park in West Texas.  Her work is represented by Simpson Gallager Gallery in Cody Wyoming.  See www.mimilitschauer.com for more examples of her work.

NANCY BUSH

Oil
Pendaries, New Mexico

Landscapes-indoor-limited to 14 students
August 6 - 10, 2012
Tuition $750

Beautiful black cows ,full bodied grazing sheep ,and  misty, atmospheric days populate many of  the  pastures of Nancy Bush’s sensitive and emotional landscapes.  The scenes depict various atmospheric scenes from around the country and could exist anywhere that is special in your own memories.  Expressively dreamlike, they capture the chill when the sun goes behind a cloud, the  smell of a drizzling rain and the rustle of leaves shivering in the treetops.

“The variety and vastness of the landscape can sometimes be overwhelming, but  I find myself thinking “less is more.””  Early in her career, Bush emphasized the “more” using bright, colorful strokes alla prima.  Several years ago, she shifted to a subdued tonalist palette and a more methodical technique was perfected.  She treasures the “fleeting moments that you get in the early mornings and late evenings.  They convey more of a mood, a feeling, because of the light”.  She achieves a tranquil universality in her paintings by melding her painted field studies and reference photographs back in the studio.  “I want viewers to feel the physicality and emotional essence of the subject, and to find a little peace, serenity, and quiet moments of reflection”.

This class will concentrate on light, water and atmosphere and its play on a painting.  The class will also cover how to achieve luminosity in the painting through layering and through the application of glazes throughout the painting process.

With a poetic economy of color and detail, Bush, a tonalist, paints low light and close values.  When nature lingers in breathless moments, she is there to capture dusk flirting with the last blush of sunset; moon shadows veiling dimension; or mist hushing the earth.  Studies, notes and photos from painting plein air around the country remind her of the tones, colors, scents and feelings so she can take the entire experience back to her studio and depict the lyrical, the profound peace and beauty in a lonely, exquisite sense.

After successful business careet, Nancy Bush threw herself into studying art at a rapid pace.  She attended Mission Renaissance art school in Austin, Texas-a school dedicated to the study of the “Masters”, while also taking  many classes from Laguna Gloria Art Museum School of Art.   She then began taking many workshops throughout the United States. “My early workshop studies were dedicated to colorful landscapes and still life, so many of my instructors were known as colorists.”  Several years later, she felt the need to change her direction after some east coast and European travel. Nancy became very interested in a more subdued tonalist palette and started studying painters from the 19th and 20th centuries such as George Inness, Isaac Levitan, Henry Twachtman, and Russell Chatham.  In the early 90’s she became familiar with the work of Michael Workman and Scott Christensen and began to study with them consistently for several years.

Nancy's work is collected around the country and has been displayed in numerous museum shows around the United States.  She has been published in numerous magazines including  Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, Western Art & Architecture, Art of the West, American Art Collector, among others.

Her work is represented by several galleries around the country including Astoria Fine Art-Jackson, WY; Insight Gallery-Fredericksburg, TX; McLarry Fine Art-Santa Fe, NM; Dawson Cole-Laguna Beach, CA

 MICHAEL WORKMAN

Oil
Landscape
September 10 - 14, 2012 in
Pendaries, NM
Tuition $895

For Michael Workman, the act of painting usually starts with an emotional response to the landscape and is ultimately completed by the viewers through their emotional responses to the painting. A delicate balance is achieved in his paintings between realism and abstraction. The landscape can be dramatic, moody and subtle. Michael Workman's art is blended in a play between opposites on a variety of levels: classicism and romanticism, thin and thick paint, warm and cool colors, careful planning and spontaneity. "That flirtation between yin and yang is by design, because in Workman's view, mastering those opposites is a source of unparalleled magic." (SouthWest Art, September 1996).

This will be primarily an indoor class.   Michael will be painting throughout the week, thus allowing the participant to see first hand how he addresses these same subjects in his own work. Michael will demonstrate and lecture for all the students, while allowing plenty of one-on-one time for discussion and critique designed to help each student achieve their own personal vision. Students should already have basic drawing skills and prior experience with landscape painting.

In this class, we will paint mostly from photographs, so bring photos that you might want to work from and a camera, as there is some fantastic subject matter in the area.  We will talk a lot about what makes good photos for painting and what to look for when you are out in the field.  This is mostly a landscape class so don't bring photos of people, pets etc.

Bring a lap top computer if you have one. It is really nice to be able to edit photos and paint from the laptop screen.

Michael encourages self-direction and personal discovery and wants to help students find their own way to solve art problems.  If you have a palette of colors that you feel good about use them.  However, for those who want to know exactly what he does, the school will be sending out his supply list about 45 days before the class begins.

For the students that want to do a "paint along with Mike" which is something he has been doing in workshops lately where everyone paints from the exact same image on the same size panel etc.,  bring a rigid 12"x12" panel primed with gesso and ready to paint on.  Other than that panel, bring what you are comfortable with.

If you have some images of some recent work bring those so he can see where you are.  People always ask  what books he recommends.  Here is a couple to think about buying if you don't already have them: John F. Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting and Edgar Payne’s book on composition.

Michael received both a BA and an MFA degree in studio art from Brigham Young University.  That training is evident in the symmetry of Michaels’s compositions, his nimble blending of old master techniques with modern ideas and his delicately restrained use of light and color.  On a number of levels, his paintings are a harmonious blend of opposites: classicism and romanticism, thin and thick paint, warm and cool colors, careful planning and spontaneity.

Workman’s work has been featured in numerous one person shows around the country.  He has been published in most of the major art publications in the United States.  See his work at www.workmanstudio.com.  He is represented by Meyer Galley East in Santa Fe, N.M.(www.meyereastgallery.com).

Oil
Oil Painting In The Russian Impressionist Tradition-Indoor
October 19 -22, 2012
(4 Days over A Weekend - Friday through Monday)
Tuition $ 625

This workshop will focus on creating a painting with the relative use of color, value, temperature and intensity.  We will learn how to interpret this while painting from life and from photos.  First, we will go over the basics of this approach while working on still life.  Later we will work from photographs or life using the previous knowledge and adding an emphasis on composition, and how one decides what might make a good painting.  We will discuss choice of subject, light, composition, and edges to create the kind of painting one has in mind.  Students may choose any subject matter they wish- landscape, still life, figurative or animals.

The instructor will do painting demonstrations using both brush and palette knife techniques.  A short segment will include a brief introduction of using digital cameras, camcorders, computers and how they can aid you in capturing and composing your subject.

We will include a short field trip to gather reference material to use later in the class.  Students are encouraged to bring cameras, camcorders, digital or otherwise to help gather their own reference material.  They may also bring their own photos or digital prints to class.  Experience is not mandatory, but a good attitude, willingness to learn and a sense of humor are.

Oil
Still Life/Portrait

October 22 - 26, 2012
Tuition $525 + $30 Model Fee

Jacqueline Kamin describes the process of painting a still life as “one of assembling pieces of a puzzle that expressed a concept about the light, form and intrigue inherent in beautiful objects.”  She is a master of this particular puzzle.    “An artist’s work is to reflect the culture of his time, and so creating art enables one to make discoveries about the wonder of nature and the dignity and nobility of man.  These are given order by art, which enables the viewer to see and understand life with greater depth.  Beauty generally results from this order, but is never the primary aim, for not all great painting is beautiful.”

“I am constantly looking for new relationships among objects, as well as new forms of color.  Paintings show us things in our environment that we may overlook or ignore, and I try to make the world around us come alive, as a rich, beautiful and exciting place.”

This workshop will focus on capturing and understanding how light moves in the painting. Students will learn a deeper understanding of creating form with shapes, value, edges, and color. Finding solutions in the language of painting. The first half day is devoted to demonstration. Jacqueline will describe her method,  tools and approach to the subject. Over the workshop she will help students with their set-ups and go thru painting with them on an individual basis. Subjects will include still life and a live model daily.

Cadwallader’s paintings are wonderfully colorful and dynamic representations of the world around us. Inspired by just about everything, Cadwallader paints subjects ranging from landscape to floral to figure with a unique quality all their own.

Born and raised in Michigan, Cadwallader received a bachelor’s degree in fine art at Kendall College of Art and Design, an exclusive private college in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While in attendance at Kendall, he was also invited to study at the Royal College of Arts in London.  In London he found the direction he wanted to take his art.  Struck by the pure and simple beauty of representational impressionism, he immediately knew that was the style he wanted to pursue.

After graduating from college with honors, Cadwallader moved to Chicago where he attended the Palette and Chisel Academy in order to further his understanding of impressionism.  Shortly after arrival, He was discovered by a respectable Chicago Gallery and so began his professional career.

As Cadwallader built his professional career many people began to take notice including galleries, magazines and jurors. NANCY BUSH

Oil
Landscapes-indoor-limited to 14 students
November 26 - 30, 2012

See more examples of her work on her own web site at www.nancybush.com.
