 PEGGI KROLL ROBERTS

Oil
Figure / Portrait
January 5 - 9, 2009
Tuition $595 + $20 model fee

In this workshop the figure and still life will be the subject matter, however, the focus will be on improving drawing skills and seeing values and colors correctly and understanding their relationships to each other.  We will paint the figure outdoors and in a studio setting with simple costumes and props.  There will be daily demonstrations emphasizing the big shapes and establishing their relationships correctly.  This provides a springboard to adding additional information if the individual artist so desires.  We will address design and technique in a way in which the individual artist may express themselves in a personal way.  Be ready to cover a lot of canvas, "learning through mileage by painting smaller sizes, I believe that more is learned through many small starts than by laboring over a large canvas."  Students will receive plenty of one-on-one instruction and individual demonstrations as needed.

After a 17 year career as an illustrator she has taken her knowledge of the fundamentals and established her life in painting and family.  Peggi and her husband (artist Ray Roberts) live with their three children on a small ranch in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in Angels Camp, CA.  A full time painter, Peggi is a member of the California Art Club, a member of the American Impressionist Society and and will be a guest artist at the Plein Air Painters of America Catalina island event this November 2001.  Her work is represented by galleries in California, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, South Carolina and Arizona.

CAROLYN ANDERSON

Oil & pastel
Figure / Portrait
January 19-23, 2009
Tuition $625 + model fee

Explore the qualities of composition, value, and color, with an emphasis on the use of contrast, rhythm, and edges. Learn to interpret the subject matter and to enjoy the challenge and spontaneity of alla prima painting. Subjects will include live models. There will be daily demonstrations, a slide presentation, and as much individual instruction as possible.

Using what she descries as a blend of expressionism and impressionism, Anderson paints the human face, landscapes, and horses with equal skill. "What draws me to a certain person is character more than anything," she says. "For a while it was children, but they can be difficult to paint without getting too cute. I try to convey a touch of humanity. I still paint horses, too, because they have such a great form. I like doing winter landscapes because of the abstract quality and Indian dancers because of the color and movement. I bring something different to my portrait work after doing landscapes. Art is all about relationships and perspective."

Born and raised in the Chicago area, Carolyn Anderson attended school at Illinois State University.  She joined the VISTA program (Volunteers in Service to America) in the early 70's and was assigned to work on an Indian reservation in north central Montana and now lives in Havre, a small community near the Canadian border.

Anderson's paintings are full of color and expression.  The focus in her work is often loosely rendered in an almost sketch-like improvisation.  The emphasis is to catch the essence of each subject.  Her subjects vary from dancers to horses to landscapes, but she is primarily known for her portraits.

Anderson has participated in the C. M. Russell Art Auction, one of the Northwest's largest shows, since 1980.  In 1999 and 2000, she was awarded Jurors' Best of Show Awards, along with the 1999 Artist's Choice Award.  As a member of the Western Rendezvous of Art, she also received a Merit Award in 1999.  Her work has been featured in national publications, including Art of the West and Southwest Art magazines.  She is represented by galleries in Taos, New Mexico; Scottsdale, Arizona; and Aspen, Colorado.

After many years of working together on various art related projects and museum shows two accomplished painters and instructors are going to teach their approaches to making a painting and succeeding with your artistic goals.

John Cosby will teach his understandable and effective limited pallet approach in oil and Gil Dellinger will teach in pastel and acrylic, in a manner that emphasizes tonal based mood, and the importance of drawing and value in completing a polished work of art.

Gil and John will be teaching outdoors with their own class and in the evening the two groups will come together for the benefit of their combined experience. About painting, Cosby says, "While standing on location, in a place I have never visited, I begin to recognize what is different from all the other places I have been. I try to capture that uniqueness." As a plein-air painter Cosby travels extensively, painting what he sees and feels everywhere he goes. A bold use of color and an energetic brush stroke are what you will see and feel when viewing a painting by Cosby.

Born in Hollywood, California, in 1955, Cosby was raised in the West. At an early age he began to draw and paint and was lucky enough to have an oil painter as his Grandmother. Cosby says, "She would give me the paint, some brushes and a scrap of canvas and set me off to paint." This early experience "took the fear out of creating a painting."

Cosby started traveling at a very early age. At age 18, he was chosen as a communications advance-man for President Nixon and began to travel the globe, continuing in this capacity through the Ford administration. He met many interesting people and saw many things, but the things that most interested him were the great works of art he encountered. "They just haunted me and helped me to set the course for my career as a painter". After leaving the White House, Cosby rebuilt an old classic sailing sloop designed by Nathaniel Herrishoff and, with a friend who had dreams of being a writer, set sail, cruising up and down the Eastern seaboard in the inland waterway for 3 years. On that voyage, he began his art career.

"Doing drawings of anything that moved me, things began to sell and my course was set." Upon his return to California, Cosby began painting the sea and landscape of Coastal California and with a strong gallery response, his success as a painter quickly followed.

Cosby currently resides and maintains a studio in Laguna Beach, California. He works on location around the world and is represented by some of the finest galleries. Cosby is one of the Founding Board Members of the prestigious Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, an Artist member of California Art Club and an Artist member of Oil Painters of America. In 1999, Cosby was the Chairman of the Laguna Plein Air Painting Competition, held at the Laguna Art Museum. With his bold contemporary style, Cosby has captured the imagination of some very important collectors. His work can be found in many private, public and corporate collections around the world. Cosby is truly an internationally-known artist. See his work on his web site at www.cosbystudio.com.

DAVID A. LEFFEL

Oil
Portrait / Still Life
March 16- 20, 2009
Tuition $1200

Leffel says, "Art is a delicate balance between the visual concept and the artist’s technique. The concept (pictorial) and the technique (craft) must be fused inextricably. The student strives to be free from painting  ‘things.’ Learning all the technique in the world will not teach you to paint that which you do not see. You can only express on canvas what you are at the time you are painting."

This workshop will attempt to explain the "basics" for the advanced or intermediate students. We will delve into techniques and tools, i.e., color, value, edges, and paint quality and their relationship to the aesthetic considerations of the surface. Concept and compositions and the artist/painter’s psychology and its effect on one’s canvas will be possible intriguing avenues of exploration.

David Leffel has instructed at the Art Students League of New York for many years.  It was there, twelve years earlier as a student, that he developed the chiaroscuro technique which has led to his tribute as a "twentieth century old master."  Under the influence of the great 17th century Dutch masters, especially Rembrandt, Leffel's work reflects a personal belief that a picture must convey a sense of mystery and beauty.  Leffel transforms the simple and ubiquitous objects of everyday life into rich creations of enigma and presence.  He has had many one man shows from New York to Santa Fe and has been part of numerous selected group exhibitions.  Leffel has a strong following as teacher and lecturer with numerous awards to his name, including Gold Medals at National Academy of Western Art, Allied Artists of America, and National Academy of Design.  He is represented by many galleries across the United States including Total Arts Gallery in Taos, New Mexico and Whistle Pik Gallery in Fredericksburg, Texas.

There is an energy, a freshness, associated with painting from life. Painting on location- ‘plein air’- and capturing the scene all at once-’ alla prima’- has excited artists and collectors since the turn of the century. Jeanne Mackenzie joins a select group of artists that share their love of nature by capturing the moment from life.

Jeanne Mackenzie’s style of painting is a blend of impressionism and realism. Her paintings are done in oil with rich warm tones and a painterly application. These reflect the bold light and striking contrasts of her favorite still lifes and western landscapes.

The subject matter comes from favorite found objects, her travels, backpacking trips with llamas or her local rural surroundings. “Painting on location and from life really hones your powers of observation and helps to create your own style of interpreting nature. Nature keeps me honest and the skills learned are invaluable tools to bring back into the studio”.

Jeanne Mackenzie is a nationally recognized artist who has been included in Oil Painters of America, Women Artist’s of the West, Arts for the Parks-Top 100, Southwest Art Magazine’s ‘Best of the West and International Artist Magazine’s ‘Master Painters’. Her work has been purchased for the collections of Intel Corp, Pioneer Japan and MD Anderson. Jean shows in select galleries in Arizona, Colorado and California.  Her work  can be seen at www.jeannemackenzie.com.
