CAROLYN
ANDERSON
Oil & pastel
Figure / Portrait
July 21 - 25, 2008
Rociada, NM
Tuition $595 + $30 model fee
Explore the qualities of composition, value, and color, with an emphasis on the
use of contrast, rhythm, and edges. Learn to interpret the subject matter and to
enjoy the challenge and spontaneity of alla prima painting. Subjects will
include live models. There will be daily demonstrations, a slide presentation,
and as much individual instruction as possible.
Using what she descries as a blend of expressionism and impressionism, Anderson
paints the human face, landscapes, and horses with equal skill. "What
draws me to a certain person is character more than anything," she says.
"For a while it was children, but they can be difficult to paint without
getting too cute. I try to convey a touch of humanity. I still paint horses,
too, because they have such a great form. I like doing winter landscapes because
of the abstract quality and Indian dancers because of the color and movement. I
bring something different to my portrait work after doing landscapes. Art is all
about relationships and perspective."

Born and raised in the Chicago area, Carolyn
Anderson attended school at Illinois State University. She joined
the VISTA program (Volunteers in Service to America) in the early 70's and
was assigned to work on an Indian reservation in north central Montana and
now lives in Havre, a small community near the Canadian border.
Anderson's paintings are full of color and
expression. The focus in her work is often loosely rendered in an
almost sketch-like improvisation. The emphasis is to catch the
essence of each subject. Her subjects vary from dancers to horses to
landscapes, but she is primarily known for her portraits.
Anderson has participated in the C. M. Russell
Art Auction, one of the Northwest's largest shows, since 1980. In
1999 and 2000, she was awarded Jurors' Best of Show Awards, along with the

SUNDT
Sculpture In Oil-Based Clay
August 4 - 8, 2008
Pendaries, NM
Tuition $ 525 + Model Fee
This class will focus on artistic expression in the form of sculpture.
We will sculpt a portrait bust of live models in oil-based clay,
beginning with a simple armature (support structure) and the application of the
clay to the armature. Mr Sundt will
instruct students on the techniques of using proportional calipers to enlarge or
diminish measurements of the subjects being sculpted, and finally, a
demonstration on the use of various tools available to sculptors that will
produce certain textures and details. The
class will primarily concentrate on learning the mechanics of the sculpting
process, but he will help students who may only have two-dimensional experience
in art to feel comfortable with the transition to a three-dimensional approach
and the handling of clay. On the
last day, a representative of Hoka Hey Foundry located near Stephenville, TX
will talk to the class about lost wax casting for those who are interested in
learning about making reproductions of their work in bronze.
He will briefly highlight mold making from an original sculpture, wax
dressing, the secondary mold investing, wax burn out, pouring of the molten
bronze into the secondary mold, metal chasing and the patina processes.
Outside of class time, Mr Sundt will give a talk about some of his
personal inspirations for his own sculpture, which he considers to be the heart
and soul of the work. This is
optional for students to attend if they desire.

(4 Days over A Weekend - Thursday through Sunday)
Tuition $ 495
This workshop
will focus on creating a painting with the relative use of color, value,
temperature and intensity. We
will learn how to interpret this while painting from life and from

JEFF C. LEGG

Still Life / Portrait
October 20-24,2008
Tuition $695 + Model fee
Over
the course of his creative life, Jeff has developed an appreciation for
the teaching process and the give-and-take relationship that he desires
to create with students and emerging artists.
Through challenge and encouragement, he hopes to convey that good
art is more than just mirroring a subject, but is also about capturing
and interpreting a feeling or a mood, and to show that good paintings
are built on principles, not formulas.
Legg believes, “The great artist has not reproduced nature, but
has expressed by his extract, the most choice sensation it has made upon
him”(Robert Henri-The Art Spirit).
Above all, he desires that those he teaches understand they can
do more than they now realize and can eliminate fear from the painting
process.
During this five day class, Jeff will demonstrate his approach to still
life and portraits from the concept to set up and lighting and the
progression to the finished work.
Through demonstrations and individual critique, he will emphasize the
time tested principles including drawing, value, edges, color and
interpreting light and shadow.
Painting from life will be emphasized and is at the core of Mr. Legg’s
artistic sensibility. Legg
says, “Visualization and being truthful about the subject are
inextricably linked and are at the heart of creativity.
A painting is a “translation” and can only become as great as the
artist’s love and understanding of his subject.”

When students say, "I would like to learn the basics of
painting," I wonder what they really mean. Do they want rules
and techniques? Rules, as desirable as they are, limit the student as he
simply does as he is told, leaving little or no chance for understanding the
underlying principles producing his desired results. However, finding out
why a background recedes, why a foreground comes forward, and why paint quality
can intrigue and hold the viewer to the surface of your painting frees the
student and expands his/her ability to appreciate more advanced concepts.
Understanding the principles of the language of painting are the true basics
needed.

instead express yourself in a bold and colorful way, by always allowing
your enthusiasm about the beauty of a landscape or a still life setup to
surface in your painting. Do
you want to achieve a convincing result in one session?
Do you want to catch a particular mood in one spontaneous moment?
Set your goal, and Guido will describe and demonstrate to you how
to get there. This is done
by learning how to see, by making decisions about hue, value, and
temperatures quickly and confidently, by concentrating your energy and
staying focused on the essential points.
This workshop gives you tools that will enable you to create a
thrilling piece of art any time, any place and under any circumstances.
Theorize in this workshop as little as possible, but as much as
necessary, and then swing a big brush for five days.

JOHN BUDICIN
Oil
Landscape, Plein Air
November 3-7, 2008
Tuition $ 650
This class is limited in size to allow the instructor to give more individual
attention. The essence of the workshop will be on what to look for; how to simplify and
make an exciting statement.
We will focus on starting with simple shapes, as accurately as possible, placing
the correct values and colors from the start. From this simple lay-in we will
work towards a finished painting.
"I will work and share what I have learned; my approach, what I look for,
what I utilize or omit from the scene."
"Class will begin with a short lecture and samples of my approach, as well
as some completed field studies. From there we will go directly on location and
begin painting."
"I like to work individually with each student and learn about their goals.
Then I direct them towards developing their own personal way of seeing."
"We will be painting at all times. In case of rain, students should bring
photographs or small studies to work from while indoor. What is important to me,
as a teacher, is to share whatever knowledge I have with my students. I have no
secrets about the way I paint; my philosophy or my approach. I want to give each
student all I can through personal attention, direction, and group discussions.
There are no shortcuts in reaching for our goals; just hard work and
determination. If I can help a student reach his/her goal then I have done my
job."

DENISE
LALUE MAHLKE
Pastel/Oil
Painting The Landscape-Indoor/Outdoor
November 8 - 10, 2008
Tuition $350
Painting
outdoors is an essential discipline for every artist. It teaches you to
see the shifts in value and color temperature as light pours through the
landscape, something that cannot be seen or experienced in a photograph
alone.
Understanding
value shifts and color temperatures is the fundamental knowledge on which
every good painting is built. Studying values and colors in the field will
enable you to paint indoors more effectively, especially when you are
using photographic reference. That said, painting outdoors can be
overwhelming if you have not done it before, or if it is done
inefficiently. This workshop will guide you! You will not only learn how
to study values and colors outdoors, but you will also be taught
instruction methods, tips, and techniques that can help you eliminate the
obstacles sometimes associated with painting in the field.
We
will study the importance of taking the time to find your focus - your
response to the subject - and clarifying your vision using thumbnail
sketches. Then, we move
forward a step, learning how to orchestrate the whole subject into a
unified painting by simplifying.
We
will begin this workshop by working outdoors directly. You will spend a
portion of this time learning to design your own compositions through
small thumbnail sketches and value studies using charcoal pencils or
graphite, in order to hone your vision and develop your observational and
drawing skills. As you will see, these thumbnail value sketches, and plein
air paintings will serve as the roadmap for your studio piece.
On
day one and two we will be working outdoors, gathering information through
our thumbnails, notes, photographs, and paintings. Day three will be spent
indoors on a studio piece, working from the reference material you have
gathered so that you can begin learning how to translate your field
research into a finished studio painting.

PHIL
BOB BORMAN
Sculpture in Oil Based Clay
December 1 - 5 , 2008
Tuition $475
In
this workshop the students will start a sculpture from scratch and will be
guided how to go from “thought to finish”.
This class centers on the importance of anatomy proportion, and
design, focusing on the human figure and the horse.
Answering the question whether the subject is accurate or in
proportion to itself and other subjects of a sculpture, enable the
sculptor to focus on his or her artistic expression of the piece.
Phil Bob will teach how to apply the “user friendly” method of
bringing on sculptures, “to scale”.
This enables the artist to use real measurements of a subject and
bring them down or up to whatever size sculpture they desire.
Also, using a proportional chart (provided), the artist can easily
determine size and accuracy of a piece quickly.
Phil Bob will demonstrate with different tools and teach the use of
texture, composition, mass, and design to enable the artist to tell his or
her story in sculpture.
The
class will also learn to become comfortable with anatomy to the point of
using it as your favorite sculpting tool, learning how to emphasize
anatomy to create a mood or establish strength in a piece.
Anatomy
answers the question “Why” in sculpture, why figures do this and
can’t do that. Anatomy is to
the sculptor as the music scale is to Beethoven
After
a short lecture or demonstration each day, the students will sculpt in oil
base clay using proportional charts and calipers to rough I a figure and
or a horse. Individual
attention is available throughout the week.
A representative from Hoka-Hey art foundry in Dublin, TX will talk
to the class regarding the lost wax process of casting and how to continue
their sculpture into bronze.

A
LIFE LONG FAN OF Will Rogers, Phil Bob mused that the cowboy humorist
brought him to an interesting artistic insight.
“Art is a visual language and like story telling, the content of
the story is simply where your start.
It is how you tell the story that brings the smile, crates the
mood, and evokes the emotions.”

His education includes an MFA in Art, several CA (Cowboy Artist)
workshops, and studied under sculptor Mehl Lawson.
